Developed
in Brazil, the Paluma guava variety gives a fruit with a deeper,
ruby-red colour and a more intense flavour than the pink guavas cultivated
elsewhere. An article published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, USA, in 1998 described the guava as the "Superfruit"; when compared with the most commonly consumed fruits it had the most exceptional combination of nutrients. Guatchup, therefore, represents a healthier alternative to the more traditional tomato-based table sauces, given that the guava´s nutritional characteristics are superior to those of the tomato.
